On this page, we’ve included some suggestions of interesting things to see and do during your stay on the island of Ireland, although the list is far from exhaustive and focuses on areas within a reasonable driving distance of Derry and Belfast, where the nearest airports are located. If you have questions, don’t hesitate to ask!

We hope to see you in Buncrana (Point A) on July 17th and in Derry (Point B) on July 19th!

A and B – Derry and its surroundings

Location A is Buncrana, where we will be having casual food, drinks and music on July 17th.

Location B is the city of Derry, which has a long and fascinating history. The ceremony will take place in the Guildhall, on the ground floor of which there is also a small museum explaining the history of the city. Furthermore, Derry has a number of different museums and tours dealing with different aspects of local history.

Between Buncrana and Derry, you can also find a structure known as Grianán Ailigh, or Greenock Fort, which was built over 1300 years ago, before being buried, then excavated once again in the 19th century.

C, E, F and I – Game of Thrones

These four sites are all recognisable as filming locations from the hit HBO show, although there are many more.

Mussenden Temple – The beach here was the filming location for ‘The Burning of the 7 Gods’, in season 2.

Dark Hedges – Best known as The Kingsroad, this area was used for many scenes taking place across Westeros.

Cushenden Caves – This location featured in Season 2, Episode 4, in a famous scene involving Melisandre and Ser Davos.

Castle Ward – While Castle Ward itself is a great location and worth a look, it also shares its grounds with the filming location for Winterfell, home of the Stark family. More information available at https://www.winterfell-tours.com/

The scenes in Winterfell, one of the first locations seen in Game of Thrones, were filmed just north of Castle Ward, Downpatrick.

D – Giant’s Causeway

One of Northern Ireland’s most famous and iconic landmarks, the Giant’s Causeway is the result of volcanic activity more than 50 million years ago, but when you see it, you can understand why the legend arose that it may have been built by a giant. You can learn more about the Giant’s Causeway legend at the tourism website.

G – Sperrin Area of Natural Outstanding Beauty

A huge area of natural conservation, the Sperrins are for those who want to see beautiful natural scenery, do some hiking, take some great photographs and maybe even stumble across a giant!

H – Belfast and the Titanic

Belfast, like Derry, is rich with history. Perhaps the most internationally recognisable story began on Queen’s Island, where the shipbuilding company Harland and Wolff constructed the HMHS Britannic, RMS Olympic and, most famously, the RMS Titanic. Today, it is home to Titanic Belfast, a museum dedicated to the story of all three ships, the city that made them, and their ultimate fates.
